Window Companies Don't Want You to Know
There are more than a few
window companies that advertise low introductory prices for
windows and installation services. The problem is that
the total price can be much more than what you had expected.
So when you're shopping for energy-efficient windows, keep the
following in mind:
1. Find out if they
charge extra to remove or dispose of existing windows.
Some window companies offer
you a price on installation only. They don't mention
that you end up paying an extra $30 to $100 for them to remove
and dispose of an older window.
2. Find out if the
windows you are buying include LoĒ³ glass or Argon.
LoĒ³ (Low E Cubed) is
a type of window glass with a clear coating that reflects heat, but
allows light to stream in. This means that it lets
sunlight in, but keeps heat out, which keeps your energy bills
low. Argon gas is also used in windows as insulation.
Some companies fail to
mention that when they sell you a replacement window, they
don't use LoĒ³ glass or Argon unless you pay extra.
If you don't pay for them, you don't get all of the insulation
benefits that can lower your energy bill. But that's not
the only downside of buying windows without those features.
If you buy windows without LoĒ³
glass, you more than likely can't qualify for tax credits.
Homeowners that replace their windows with LoĒ³ glass
energy-efficient windows have been able to receive up to
$1,500 in tax credits in the past.
Some companies do not
include LoĒ³ glass or Argon in their promotionally priced
windows, and will charge you anywhere from $50 to $100 extra
3. Find out if a
half-screen is included in the promotional price.
As you probably know, it's
nice to be able to open your windows when the weather is nice,
or just to air out your home once in a while. But an
open window with no screen can also be an invitation for
mosquitoes, roaches, and other pests. A half-screen not
only keeps most bugs out, but it prevents leaves, dust and
other debris from getting into your home.
There are some window
companies that won't tell you that half-screens aren't
included with the "promotional" price that you've been
offered. Need a half-screen for your new window? There's
a good chance you will have to pay extra for that.
